A Picture Perfect Day To Play 18

Matt Belmonte
In the teams final week of the golf season, we lightened the mood a little bit and brought some fun into the mix. We played mini golf on Monday and we had our best ball team scramble and senior dinner on Tuesday. The team scramble has become a tournament that the golfers look forward to from the very beginning of the season. There were two foursomes and a threesome, one player was absent due to prior engagements . The two coaches played as two player team. The coach’s guessed at the start of the round that 5 under par would be the number. Team Eli, Jaedyn , Grady and Brody birdied the ninth to do just that. They shot 5 under. The coach’s came in at 4 under. Team Jack, Colin, Matt and Ben shot 3 under, and Team Mark, Sean, Jeff and extra shot came in at 2 under. We followed up our tournament with a pizza dinner courtesy of families of the players. Thank you to all who were able to contribute to our dinner. It was greatly appreciated and a nice way to finish off the season as a team.

Wednesday the team sent four players to the Lakes Region Championship tournament at Lake Sunapee CC. Mark, Jack, Eli and Colin all earned the spots to represent the Huskies in the 18 hole match against all the schools in our league. The weather was perfect. Sunny, a breeze to keep the bugs away, and a pleasant temperature.

Playing in his third championship tournament, who was also last years co mvp in the 18 hole championship match, Mark fired another impressive round of 6 over par, 76. Mark was able to earn 30 points in the stableford scoring format. He was the leading point earner for the golf team throughout the season, and his round in the tournament is proof of why. Marks game has elevated to such an incredible level over these past three years. Everytime he takes the tee he is locked in. It is really quite something to watch. I’ve had the pleasure of playing many rounds with Mark and im always left speechless. Well done Cap, its been an honor to coach you.

Also playing in his third championship tournament was Jack. Jack and Mark were both part of the four players that won the championship back in 2023. Jack fired a ten over par, 80, earning 23 points for the team. Jack has played an intricate role on the team since his freshman year. He is the only 4 year player on the roster. I have had the incredible opportunity to coach him for three of those years. I’ve watched his game go from highs to lows and lows to highs, but I have never seen his spirits or determination or confidence drop to the lows. His passion and love for the game is present every time he takes the tee. Which is most likely the reason Jack is heading to Coastal Carolina to pursue a career in golf management. The sport will be lucky if this is the  “course “ Jack stays on. Well done Cap, its been an honor to coach you.

Making his first appearance in the LRC was Eli. Eli has had an amazing season. His golf game has grown incredibly in a year. He is articulate when he plays, and methodical. He plays the game like a gentleman and he plays it well. Eli fired an 82, two strokes more than Jack, but earned 24 points, one more than Jack. That’s Stableford. You stay in it till the very end, because you never know how many birdies or pars you can fire off to erase a few bad holes. Eli is a two year team veteran, and you can expect him to make some noise in the coming years for varsity golf team. Well done Eli.

Also making his debut in the championship tournament was Colin. Colin is another two year veteran and another player that has worked tremendously on improving his golf game. From when he first made the team last year to the end of this season, he has shaved an average of 12 strokes off his scores, Hes been carding nine hole rounds in the high 30’s and low 40’s all season and there is no doubt he will be touching even par in no time at all. Colins round started off hot by going par par. However, the bogie train came rolling in and there was no stopping it. That didn’t change the smile that dawned his face though. He knows he could’ve played better than he did, but that’s golf. That’s why we love the game. You’re playing against your toughest competitor,,,,yourself. There’s an excitement in that, and an adrenaline rush. Thats what drives Colin to excel in this game. Colin fired a 91 earning 16 points….Be proud of yourself and what you’ve done to improve your game Colin, because the coach’s sure are. We’ll be seeing his name on the leaderboard for years to come, there’s no doubt about that. Well done Colin.
