Rain Can’t Dampen The Huskies Spirit

Matt Belmonte
For the second match in a row, the Huskies found themselves caught in a rain storm after getting out on the course. After a roll of thunder, the warning horn sounded, and play was suspended. Twenty minutes later the starters headed back out to where they left off to resume their matches. If the course is open, we play.

Heading out in the first grouping was Mark and Jack.

Mark continues to record low scores on his card. With just two bogies and seven pars, Mark went on to take the point in his match. He halved the first three holes, lost the fourth, and stayed one down till he won the seventh. He won the eighth and tied the ninth to earn the victory. His game is on point.

Jacks game is right there! Hes firing on almost every cylinder, and once that final cylinder kicks in, he’s gonna be lights out. Carding another solid round, a four over 40, Jack was down in his match most of the way through. On the seventh hole, with the coaches standing on the back of the green, along with Jacks grandfather, Jack nearly slam dunked his !50 yard tee shot. The ball flew just over the cup and left a ball mark a foot behind the hole. A lipped out birdie putt gave him a gimme par, and that turned the momentum back in his favor. He won the ninth hole to halve his opponent after being down the entire match.

In the second pairing were Eli and Colin.

Eli is playing some unbelievable golf. Any day now he will be recording an even par round. Firing yet another round in the thirties, a three over 39, Eli went on to be a part of sweeping all three points with Colin. Three bogies were the only blemishes in his round. He jumped out to an early lead and went on to handle business. His patience and preparation as he stands over the ball is something to admire. He has put so much work into his game, and it shows with every round he plays.

Don’t let Colins 44 fool you. The total score does not accurately reflect his round. One look at Colins scorecard and it was clear, he was feeling it. He was on his way to a four or five over until a blowup hole reared its ugly head late in his round. A triple on the difficult eighth hole contributed to a higher score than Colin was on pace to shoot. That’s the beauty of match play. With his opponent also carding a triple on the eighth, Colin stayed one up in the match. In match play you need to have a short memory. You need to shake off a bad hole and turn the page. That’s exactly what Colin did. He parred the ninth, halved the hole and won his match.

Teeing off in the final foursome was Matt and Jaedyn.

Both players have been solid starters when they have been in the lineup. Today was no different. Matt with a 43 and Jaedyn with a 44, fell just short in their matches, but to see where their games have progressed to in a short amount of time is beyond impressive. Losing a match does not mean you played bad, it just means the other player played better. These two will have an unbelievable game for themselves in no time at all, because the more they play, the better they are getting.
