Today the New Hampton Huskies boarded the busses and headed south on 93 to face Winsor School. After traveling over two hours, they arrived in Boston, ready to take the field with a focus of elevating their level of play on both ends of the field.
The Huskies came out dominating in the first quarter. As the ball moved up the field on a fast break, Cara Kuczek sent a strong, diagonal pass and Lanah Quong, with an all-out hustle play tipped the ball in, putting the Huskies on the scoreboard early on. Emma MacPherson provided off ball communication, setting her teammates up for strong passes and quick movement. With 5:37 left in the quarter, Lily Thomas was ready in the circle with her stick down and scored off a rebound from the goalie’s pads. Providing coverage in the midfield and back on defense, Abby Schrader was very active in moving the ball up the field. With just 2:29 left in the quarter, Lola Gallo sent a ball across goal and Quong found the back of the net again to make the score 3–0 at the end of the first quarter.
Picking up where the Huskies left off, they continued aggressive play and stepping to the ball. Ella Fischetti was pivotal in the back field providing strong clears out of the circle. Supporting her on defense was Kaya Farnsworth and Abby Schrader with moving the ball up the field. In less than four minutes into the second quarter, Gallo and Quong found themselves headed to goal. Quong sent a solid pass to Gallo and she was able to put it in goal, making the score 4–0. The Huskies were not done scoring! With 3:59 left to play in the second quarter, Kuczek saw MacPherson open in the middle of the circle, and MacPherson sent a fast shot in to wrap up the half, creating a 5-0 lead. With energy, the Huskies entered half time eager to prepare for the second half.
The third quarter for the Huskies included some defensive grit. Kelsey Baker made a defensive dive to help goalie Luna McCulloch protect the cage. Schrader and Baker were relentless on defensive corners as they flew out of the cage causing distractions when needed. Madi Hannon also proved to be a disruption to Winsor with her stick down and feeding the ball forward. Despite the Huskies’ hustle, Winsor scored on a weak side post deflection, making the score 5-1.
Moving into the fourth quarter, the Huskies used the four-point lead as an opportunity to utilize the bench. Our strong defensive line was led by Riley Proulx, Ellie Zink, Katie Kavka, and Ryley Chipman. They focused on keeping the ball out of the circle and forward motion to our midfielders. Holding down the midfield positions were Tricia Carr, Olivia Esposito, Brooke King, and Liv Murray. With fresh legs on the field and enthusiasm from the bench, the Huskies could not be stopped! Pushing forward and looking to gain momentum towards goal were forwards Kayla O’Connor, ad Emilie Poirier. While the Huskies did not score again this half, it’s without a doubt that this win was a team effort!
Leaving Boston today, the Huskies know that they need to regroup and focus as they look to compete against a strong St. Paul’s team on Monday at Kennedy Field. Roll Skies!
