Huskies Advance to Championship with Gritty Semi-Final Win!

The Huskies kicked off their semi-final Saturday in high spirits, starting the day with a Dunkin’ run at 10:30 a.m., buzzing with excitement for their match against Newton Country Day. The energy was palpable—from the locker room to the sidelines, where enthusiastic fans (and hot dogs!) added to the lively atmosphere.

From the opening whistle, the pace of the game was electric. Both teams came out strong, battling for possession with quick steps and relentless pressure on the ball. The Huskies showcased excellent communication, crisp passing, and fierce determination. Newton Country Day responded by shutting down early scoring opportunities despite several solid Husky shots on goal. The first quarter ended in a tense scoreless draw, with the Husky defense stepping up to deny the Falcons from capitalizing on their early corners.

The game’s first breakthrough came five minutes into the second quarter, with the Falcons slipping one past the Husky defense under the glare of the sun. Down 1-0, the Huskies didn’t flinch. Fueled by their drive, they turned up the intensity, pushing into the offensive zone. Less than five minutes later, they answered back. A key play began with a great pass into the circle, where Lola battled fiercely for the ball and sent it goalward. Kennedy tipped it to the right of the Falcon goalie, where Ireland was perfectly positioned to fire it into the net on a one-timer. Tied 1-1 at halftime, the Huskies regrouped, focusing on using the width of the field and maintaining their strong play.

The third quarter opened with a bang, as the Huskies seized the lead just two minutes and 38 seconds in. Earning an offensive corner, Kelsey delivered a sharp insert that found its way to the stroke line amidst a scramble. Cara showed incredible skill, striking the ball mid-air and sending it into the goal for a 2-1 Husky lead.

Late in the third quarter, the Huskies nearly extended their lead when Kennedy took a direct shot off another corner. Though the ball hit the back of the net, the goal was called back, as the initial shot originated outside the circle. Unfazed, the Huskies stayed composed and kept the Falcons at bay with stellar defensive work.

The fourth quarter was a test of grit and focus, with the Huskies doubling down on their commitment to smart, composed play. Despite pressure from the Falcons in the final minutes, the Husky defense held strong, sprinting back to shut down every attack. The team’s relentless effort, sharp five-yard plays, and brilliant teamwork secured a thrilling 2-1 victory.

With this hard-fought semi-final win, the Huskies advance to the NEPSAC Championship game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. against Greens Farms Academy at Ethel Walker School in Connecticut. Let’s bring it home, Huskies!
