Huskies Battle Bulldogs in NEPSAC Semi-Finals
The final score (61-74) of today's NEPSAC semi-final match-up with Nobles is not a true indication of how close this game was. The Huskies held a slim 15-14 point lead after the first quarter behind the sharp shooting of Serenity Lancaster and Casey Stores. New Hampton struggled offensively in the second quarter scoring just 6 points, giving Nobles a 28-21 lead at the half.
The Bulldogs had numerous trips to the foul line in the second half (34 for the game compared to just 17 for NHS), but the 5th-seeded Huskies did not get discouraged. They continued to battle and took advantage of their time at the charity stripe, connecting on 12 of 15 attempts in the final 16 minutes. Stores was on fire from deep, knocking down three 3-pointers and finishing the game with 14 points. Despite being double-teamed, Lancaster competed on both ends of the court netting 16 points and pulling down 7 rebounds.
The Huskies tied the game at 57 with just under 5 minutes to play. Elyse Ngenda was doing everything she could to get her team to the championship game. She dished 6 assists, grabbed 9 boards, and scored a team-high 22 points. Unfortunately, the Huskies turned the ball over on consecutive trips down the court in the waning minutes, and Nobles took full advantage. Shoutout to sophomore Shannon O'Leary who continues to get better each game. She finished with 8 points and 9 rebounds today. The Huskies will no doubt take the lessons they learned this season and return to the court stronger and more determined than ever next winter.
We wish to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to our four seniors: Tahlia Pena, Adriana Hernandez, Kitt Jones, and Aniyaha Perez (Manager). They have given so much to the NHS Women's Basketball program during their time in Husky Nation. It has been a pleasure witnessing their growth, both as athletes and people and we wish them all the best in their next chapter. We know they will CRUSH IT!
