This game was a rematch of last year's National Championship Semifinal.Western Reserve won that matchup and went on to beat Putnam Science in the National Championship. Western Reserve is run by fellow Huskies Matt Garvey and Pete Hutchins. Coach Garvey and Hutchins run one of the best prep programs in the country! A belated congratulations on their National Championship!
In the first half, the Huskies struggled to make their shots on the perimeter, going 0-10 from 3 point land. They were able to overcome that performance by attacking the rim in transition and applying pressure on the offensive glass. New Hampton also turned in their best defensive half of the season, holding WRA to 25 total points, on 9-28 (32.1%) shooting and 3-12 (25%) from 3.
The second half, WRA came out firing. They blitzed the Huskies, shooting a scorching 57% from the floor and 50% from 3. New Hampton was able to come up with big stops late, and shot 11-12 from the free throw line to close the game out.
Huskies had 3 double digit scores in Naz Meyer (22 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals), Mason Blackwood (21 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 assist) and Keyshuan Tillery (16 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 steal). We were also able to get big contributions from Jayden Harrington (8 points), Ty Tabales (7 points, including the biggest shot of the game, a late shot clock 3), Gus Fried (7 points)
