Huskies Fall Short to Talented Dexter Southfield

- DEXTER SOUTHFIELD

New Hampton started their 2023 -2024 season playing last year’s Class AA runners-up, Dexter Southfield. Hitting the road with eight new players, we knew it was going to be challenging. Tip-off was at 5 PM and the Huskies were ready to compete! There was back-and forth scoring in the first quarter with Elyse Ngenda 26’ and Martina Pike ’24 putting the Huskies on the board. Abby Schrader 27’ was the first off the bench, making an immediate impact with a steal and an assist for Tahlia Pena ’25. New Hampton struggled to score in the beginning of the second until Ne’veah Buntley ’24 and Adriana Hernandez 25’ made some great plays offensively in the end of the quarter to tie the game 27 – 27. In the third quarter, Dexter went on a 11 – 0 run and the Huskies got into some foul trouble. New Hampton picked up their defense to cut Dexter’s lead. A huge three by Hernandez to start the fourth was great momentum for the Huskies. Kitt Jones ’25 subbed in and was a difference maker on the defensive end. Offensively, Ngenda and Buntley found ways to score keeping the Huskies in it. Unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalize at the free throw line, especially in the fourth. New Hampton fell short 48 – 58.
